North Atlanta Senior Men's Golf Assn
Latest News 6/6
Overview: Founded in 1982, we are a like-minded group of senior men's golfers (over 50) who organize events each month at various member clubs.
Affiliated Clubs: Atlanta National, Berkeley Hills, Big Canoe, Bridgemill, Brookfield, CC of Roswell, Iron Horse, Eagle Watch, Fairways of Canton, Indian Hills, Laurel Springs, Olde Atlanta, Polo, Rivermont, White Columns, Windermere, and Woodmont.
Events: NASMGA hosts one golf event per month at one of our affiliated clubs from March through October, and occasionally a Play Day at non-affiliated clubs. The typical event is an ABCD team format with live scoring and full Golf Genius support.
Matchplay: Each member club competes as a team. These club teams are organized randomly into three “pods” at the beginning of the season. Within each pod, there will be six rounds of home and away matches throughout the spring and summer. Eight top teams across the three pods then advance to the championship and consolation bracket matches in the fall to determine the overall standings. Overall, more than 1300 individual rounds are played during the season to crown a champion.
NASMGA BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING May 29, 2025 White Columns Country Club
Membership Update – Tom Kinney reported that we have 791 members as of today.
Secretary’s Report – Paul Spofford presented the Minutes (See Website) from the April 1, 2025, meeting at Berkeley Hills CC. Motion to approve the Minutes was made and seconded - Minutes approved.
Treasurer’s Report – Barry Lakas reported that we had $17,809.71 in our checking account as of 5/22/25. Bridgemill made its annual payment today. Rivermont’s payment is outstanding. NASMGA’s corporate tax return has been filed. (See Website).
Match Play Report – Jim McMenamin reported that the 2025 Match Play season is well underway. There have been a couple of issues resolved with help from Keith Sievers and Golf Genius.
Webmaster Report – Keith Sievers reported that Golf Genius is working smoothly except for a couple of glitches that have been addressed / corrected. A question came up about match play events being held with tee times versus a shotgun start – with only very late notice to the visiting captain. NASMGA has been set up around shotgun starts. Jim McMenamin suggested that captains need to get with their pro shop staff as early as possible and lock in tee times. This should not be left to the week of the tournament and, ideally, captains should set the schedule for the year with their pro staff in February; if not already done, it should be done now for the rest of the season.
Communications – Jim Rice reported that all is going well and the White Columns sign-up will open on Sunday.
2026 Tournaments – Rich Valentine reported that five 2026 tournament dates have been set up. We need to fill slots in March, April, and August. Woodmont appears to be out since the club requires a contractual $10,000 minimum commitment to hold an event.
Old Business –
- Tom Kinney noted that our $25 per member payments are due…Bridgemill made payment today and Rivermont is outstanding.
- There was a lengthy discussion of the Pace of Play (POP) topic. (See Website for copy of the NASMGA Pace of Play Policy – Rev 5/27/25). Note: BOD members need to study the Policy and function as “ambassadors” for it at future events. Three issues were brought forward as “next steps” for a formal vote by the Board:
- It was proposed that we start usage of the POP Policy at the White Columns tournament. Motion was made and seconded. Motion carried.
- It was proposed that NASMGA not post scores for tournaments and leave it to the individual player. Motion made and seconded. Motion carried.
- It was proposed that any group required to skip a hole to maintain POP be penalized one stroke per player. Motion made and seconded. Motion carried.
New Business –
- Tom Kinney asked for volunteers to serve as marshals at the White Columns event. Mike Smithson, Steve Davis, James Mason, Michael Uliss, and Tom Kinney volunteered to help at White Columns. Jim Penman volunteered to help at the Atlanta National event.
- There was a discussion of “Play Date” participation and whether non-NASMGA players could join us if the event wasn’t full. The consensus seemed to be not to add non-members but to ensure that we do not have a tournament and a play date in the same month.
- Paul Spofford and Russ Coddington made a brief report on the Berkeley Hills tournament held April 1.
- Jim Rice made a brief report on the “Pick-Your-Own Foursome” play date event at Chestatee GC that adhered to POP despite CPO on that date.
- Bill Medbery reported that White Columns is ready for the June 16th tournament and it will be an A-B-C-D Best Gross/Best Net event.
- Bill Medbery noted that wet conditions today necessitate CPO and there are just 3-4 players planning to play due to the forecast for more rain.
Next Board Meeting – Atlanta National CC on June 30, 2025, with breakfast at 8:30, meeting at 9:00, and 20 slots for golf after the meeting.
